Dios-Peru, Acre-Brasil e Pando-Bol{\'{\i}}via (MAP) {\'e}
constitu{\'{\i}}da por aproximadamente 91% de florestas. No
entanto, in{\'u}meros problemas causados pelo incremento
per{\'{\i}}odo estudado na regi{\~a}o; ii) Caracterizar e
Dessa
regi{\~a}o.
de florestas contribu{\'{\i}}ram com 22,7%. Al{\'e}m disso, as
queima descontrolada. ABSTRACT: The triple Amazonian border has
approximately 91% of forests and is composed of Madre de
Dios-Peru, Acre-Brazil, and Pando-Bolivia (MAP). However,
countless problems caused by the progressive increase in
deforestation, followed by the fire use, present themselves quite
ostensibly in the region. Only in 2018, almost 40 thousand hot
spots were detected across the MAP area, representing an increase
of approximately 49% compared to the previous four years. Thus,
monitoring and early identification of these episodes and the most
sensitive locations make up key variables for implementing
mitigation actions. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze the
spatio-temporal patterns caused by the fire use practices in the
MAP region in a 16-year time series, between 2003 and 2019 in
order to (i) Develop an automatic algorithm for detecting burnings
and fires to identify the scars of the burned area in each year of
the studied period in the region; (ii) Characterize and quantify
the classes of land use and cover affected by fire; (iii) Analyze
the recurrence of burning in the vegetation and the different
types of land use and land cover, and (iv) Diagnose the temporal
pattern of the burning in the different ages of Secondary
Vegetation. Hence, the burned area detection algorithm was
developed using the spectral indices NDVI, as an alternative to
separate images with no evidence of burning, and NBR, both to
identify the images with burning occurrence, and to detect the
scars of burning and fires together with the NIR band and their
respective temporal differences. The classification results were
tested, inspected, and compared with other products. In the end,
this methodology yielded a satisfactory automated product, named
Fire MAP. These data were then integrated with land use and land
cover maps to characterize the pattern of burning occurrence
through the different covers affected and to quantify the extent
reached by the events. The results show an accumulated 3,832
million hectares burned in the MAP region over the 16 years
analyzed, seven of which presented a burned extension above the
average of the periods related to deforestation in the region. Of
the total burned, 2,744 million hectares refer to areas of
agricultural and livestock use, equivalent to 71% on average in
the analyzed series, while forest areas contributed with 22.7%. In
addition, the highest recurrence rates of fire also happened in
areas of agricultural use, with 26% of the burned areas in this
class occurring from three to sixteen times, with just 7% of the
forest areas having more than two recurrences. Another evidence
regarding the fire origin lies in the average size of burned area
scars in the region, so that small scars (0.5. to 50 ha)
contribute with about 67 to 86% of the total since this size of
polygons is commonly related to agricultural land preparation. The
results also showed that 48.2% of secondary vegetation burning
occurs between one and three years of regeneration, and in drought
years there is an increase of about 2% in the burning of
two-year-old vegetation compared to the one-year-old one. To
conclude, this study allowed the identification of areas more
prone to the occurrence and recurrence of burnings and forest
fires, and, potentially, can assist in planning actions for
mitigation of these events, supporting decision making concerning
the reduction and control of uncontrolled burning episodes.",
